The day go off to a bad start with the news our flight had been cancelled from Vancouver due to fog at our destination, Vernon. Keith joined us from hospital by video call, we all wished him well for his operation later today. Morning class took place with the sheriff dispensing fines (monetary) – including one for Keith for not standing up …disregard the rules at your peril!!
We caught the 9.00am ferry to Vancouver. Our bus driver was expecting a day off instead he drove the nearly 5 hours journey north. The road was originally a rail road, abandoned in the late 50’s due to winter avalanches. The highway was opened in the 80’s but is still affected by avalanches. Serious fires damaged thousands of trees, one by lightening strike and the other caused deliberately as a result of some dispute. Construction work to recover from serious flooding continues. In addition they are installing a new oil pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver.
We were met in Vernon by John Shea and after a quick change we headed to Vernon CC. We were greeted by the legendary ice technician Dave Merklinger, our host for the next two days. Our games will be live streamed tomorrow. We had a relaxed dinner before communicating with family and friends at home. Not a late night – a big day tomorrow.
